Outdoor Movies - Gourmet Picnic Basket

An Outdoor Movie Screening and a Gourmet Picnic Basket: Call it New York Sophistication

In many towns, taking in a summer movie means spending a beautiful summer night in a stuffy theater eating stale popcorn with artificial butter. The Benjamin hopes your summer movie-going will be done with a little more New York panache. We’d like to see you in front of a huge screen, in an open space under the stars, while you sip a spectacular cocktail and enjoy a picnic basket as imagined by Iron Chef winner Geoffrey Zakarian, chef of The Benjamin’s restaurant, The National.

****
Geoffrey Zakarian Picnic Tip:
"I always make a mixture of gin, lemon juice, agave and chunks of lemon. Once chilled, I put it into a thermos. I bring a Ziploc bag filled with ice (which keeps the food cold on the way to the picnic) and then use the ice for the drinks, topping them off with soda water."

****

Step one is choosing the movie and destination. The City of New York Department of Parks and Recreation has put together this terrific line-up. All showings are free and movies range from family friendly, like a showing of All Dogs Go to Heaven (at the 103rd Street Community Garden on July 14th) to classic film noire To Have and Have Not (at Target Brooklyn Community Garden on July 15th) to the nostalgic fun of Ghostbusters (at the Tony Dapolito Recreation Center on July 21).

****
Geoffrey Zakarian Picnic Tip:
"Pack things that can stay fresh for longer periods of time as a base for the meal: a fresh baguette, sliced jambon de Paris, an assortment of hard and semi-hard cheeses. Shredded cabbage and chicken salad or noodle salads also hold up well."

****

Step two is packing your picnic. You can prepare your own basket, using Chef Zakarian’s tips and your own inspiration, or you can take a little shortcut and order a complete picnic basket from The National – glasses, cutlery and plates included. Guests of The Benjamin can even order a National picnic basket at the time they book their stay.

****
Geoffrey Zakarian Picnic Tip:
"Tote fruits like grapes and cherries because they are whole, require no cutting and can be easily shared. Round out your meal with a nice crudité of purple and orange carrots, halved radishes and endive to dip into hummus. "

****

Last but not least, grab your basket, a blanket and a cab. In New York City, summer days are precious. The Benjamin hopes that you will savor every one of them.
