Can’t Miss Holiday Window Displays in New York City
Experience City Life
For New York City retailers, the stakes are high and the competition is steep to create unforgettable, newsworthy holiday window displays that delight visitors and locals alike. Each year, department stores such as Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, Barneys, and Bergdorf Goodman outdo themselves and their windows from the year before. Major retailers keep their windows decorated through January 4, so there is still plenty of time to plan your New York City holiday window shopping vacation. Here are just a few of the must-visit holiday windows displays for 2015.
Barneys New York
The “Chillin’ Out” theme of Barneys windows this year incorporates real ice sculptures in the form of ice castles, art installations, and ice motorways, enclosed and kept frozen in the windows, for a breathtaking effect that transports viewers to a magical winter wonderland. A specially designed and lit Chihuly-in-ice exhibit turns the windows into a veritable art museum.
Nothing sparkles quite like Swarovski Crystals, and Bergdorf Goodman’s holiday windows display is a celebration of the brand’s 120th anniversary. Different themes, including a window devoted to birthdays, a Crystal Cavern, and a Crystal Ball, are created with over seven million crystals for a simply magnificent visual experience.
The windows at Bloomingdales this year focus on the five senses, created with a wide array of beautiful flowers. Scenes made up of festive animals like puppies and deer give onlookers the opportunity to interact the display, smelling the pine of a Christmas tree, tasting specially dispensed peppermints, and offering a photo op with a touch-screen window.
Lord & Taylor
The windows at Lord & Taylor celebrate New York City at Christmas time with a Winter Wonderland theme that is both fashionable and sweet. Colorful cakes decorate windows with bakery scenes, while friendly gingerbread men and gingerbread houses adorn others. Yet other windows are decked out with lavish merchandise, rich fabrics, sparkling trees and woodland creatures, and a general sense of elegance and whimsy.
The 50th anniversary of A Charlie Brown Christmas is the theme of Macy’s windows this year, where the windows of this leader in the Christmas decorating tradition feature scenes from the much-loved Christmas movie. Snoopy is the official Holiday Ambassador for Macy’s in 2015, carrying the Peanuts theme all the way through the season.
Saks Fifth Avenue
Saks celebrates winter this year with its windows displaying an international twist on wintry scenes. Visit the Great Wall of China, Great Barrier Reef, the Colosseum, and more, all looking icy and otherworldly.
