NYC Hotel Known for Its Innovative Sleep Program Reverses the Wake-Up Call with Nighttime Reminder for Road Warriors to Power Down & Get Some Rest
New York, NY – February 25, 2013 – U.S. business travel spending is projected to exceed $100 billion this year, up from $72.4 billion in 2009, according to industry research group PhoCusWright. Typically more business travel equates to less sleep while away from home. The Benjamin, a boutique New York City hotel known for its innovative sleep program, is launching a Work-Down Call, targeting business travelers who can’t seem to power down and get some much-needed rest while on the road.

Guests simply need to call the front desk and request a Work-Down Call. The hotel’s Sleep Concierge, or a member of her team, will then ring the room and remind the road warrior that it is time to power down and prepare for a good night’s sleep.

“It’s hard to pull away from work, especially when you are traveling on business and find yourself in meetings most of the day then trying to catch up on email at night,” said Joe Gaeta, The Benjamin’s general manager. “With no one telling you to stop work and no distractions when you are in the room by yourself, business travelers find themselves working past midnight. The Work-Down Call is our way of trying to help our guests findwork/life balance while on the road and get the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep per night.”

One recent article suggests that with the “buzz” always on, we are drowning out the so-called “eureka moments.” It points out that one company has started switching off Blackberry email servers 12 hours a day so employees can power down.

This new service will launch at The Benjamin on March 3, timed with the start of National Sleep Awareness Week™, which goes through March 10 (aptly timed with the return to Daylight Savings Time when clocks move ahead one hour and many Americans lose an hour of sleep).

The Benjamin’s Sleep Concierge suggests that guests schedule the Work-Down Call an hour before they would like to actually go to sleep. It is recommended to turn off all electronics one hour before bed so that the brain can wind down to a state where it can easily relax into a deep sleep. Unnatural light from computers, televisions and the like prevent the brain from making the neurotransmitters that encourage healthy sleep. Reading a good book (the old-fashioned way) or writing in a journal are great alternatives to technology. The Sleep Concierge can also arrange for items from the Sleep Menu to be sent up, such as a white noise machine, a dream dictionary or a bedtime snack of warm milk with a PB&J on banana bread.

At The Benjamin sleep is core, not coincidence. The Work-Down Call, coupled with the services of The Benjamin’s Sleep Concierge (the industry’s first and only), the 12-choice Pillow Menu and Sleep Menu, come together to ensure that guests get the best possible night’s sleep. The Benjamin Bed, a Serta® mattress created exclusively for the hotel (dressed in 500-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, a down duvet, luxury Anichini bedding), has been accused of being the most comfortable bed ever.
